Therapists for college students near Pittsburgh, PA
Shamima Akhter
Providing a safe and validating space for others is a value of mine. This has lead me to pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology and thus far 8 years of experience. Throughout my training and career, I've always gravitated towards the college/graduate school population. I've especially appreciated working with students on relationships, identity, and self-love. Being a South-Asian, I've also enjoyed exploring cultural/ethnic/racial identity with clients. In a therapy session my approach is inviting, warm, curious, and a grounding presence. I strongly believe clients are experts on themselves; hence my approach to therapy is empowering and encouraging clients to lean into experiences to meet their goals. I like to use the metaphor that my clients are in the driver's seat and I'm there to support them as they explore where they want to go. Along with a multicultural lens, some therapeutic orientations I often pull from are CBT, ACT, and IFS. Gift-giving is important in many cultures and hence the gift I want to give clients is hope, validation, and safety. I also strive to plant the seeds of empowerment and self-love in clients and continue to nurture that together throughout our sessions. I encourage clients to try out various exercises/skills in between sessions to continue to meet their goals. Overall I hope a client leaves our sessions feeling supported, heard, and respected.

School can be some of the most rewarding years of your life but they can also be overwhelming. Between classes, internships, work, relationships, family expectations, finances, and figuring out who you are and where you're headed, sometimes it's good to have some extra support. Therapy gives you a place to talk openly about what's going on, without judgment. Whether you're feeling anxious, stressed, burned out, stuck, lonely, or simply trying to make sense of a major life transition, you don't have to navigate it alone. I work with college and graduate students on concerns such as anxiety, self-esteem, relationships, identity exploration, gender identity, academic stress, life transitions, binge eating, and body image. Many of my clients are also learning how to manage life on their own for the first time and are discovering that no one ever really taught them how to handle the emotional side of money. As a Certified Financial Social Worker, I can help you develop a healthier relationship with money, spending, debt, budgeting, and financial decision-making. Together, we can explore both the practical and emotional aspects of financial wellness so you feel more confident and in control. My style is warm, supportive, and down-to-earth. I'll meet you where you are, help you build on your strengths, and offer practical tools along the way. If you're curious about working together, I'd be happy to schedule a free 15-minute consultation to see if we're a good fit.

Canopy Counseling Unlimited LLC
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Behavioral Specialist in PA. After graduating in 2004 from Rosemont College, I began my work in Counseling and Behavioral Therapy. I worked for the top companies servicing clients before I decided to go out on my own. I have my private practice, Canopy Counseling Unlimited in Media, PA. I have extensive work with children, adolescents, individuals, families, blended families, and divorced parents. My counseling strength is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you feel, think, and act. The therapy aims to find practical ways to help you deal with problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts. With over 19 years of experience, I have worked with individuals diagnosed with Anxiety(Certified,) Autism (Certified) (both child and adult- with a license in this area), ADHD-(certified,) Bipolar, Depression, Stress Management, Trauma(Certified,) and too many others to list. My license in counseling helps focus on feelings and beliefs while my license in behavioral therapy helps focus on behaviors and environments that impede growth. I use both in my approach. My background in mental health has given me experience in knowing that each person's needs are special and unique and that there are no "cookie-cutter" answers to solve problems. (If that was the case there would be one book and I'd be out of a job.) I believe that therapy should be just as important as seeing your doctor or dentist regularly. With the stress of today, everyone is experiencing some parts of their life that are not what they want them to be. We will find strategies that will help you, I will teach you coping skills that will fit you, and help you process the areas in your life you want to change. You will apply these strategies and be able to see a positive change in your life. I want you to be comfortable coming to see me and feel supported. I come up with lots of ideas to help you on your journey. We will work together to understand the "whys" and build better strategies to improve the areas in your life you want to change. We will look at ways to improve communication with others and develop good self-esteem. I believe that everyone can succeed when they feel supported and not judged. I will meet you where you are and work with you on finding balance. My approach is to help individuals and families bring back and restore the balance that was once there and watch the growth that takes place! The language that I speak is English. Outside of behavioral health care and in my free time, I enjoy building things, remodeling, mission work, snow skiing, travel, spending time at the beach, and of course, time with my family.

Our treatment philosophy involves evidence-based mental wellness services that start with therapy and incorporate comprehensive medication management if indicated. While based in the greater DC Metropolitan Area, clinicians hold licenses in AL, AZ, DC, FL, IL, MD, MT, ND, NE, PA, VA, and WI and are available to see patients throughout those states via telepsychiatry. Veterinary Social Work, Nature-Informed Therapy & Walk-and-Talk Sessions. 🌳🐕🦆🦌 Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, deeply caring, compassionate individuals who have spent so much energy taking care of others, meeting high expectations, and holding everything together that they've lost touch with themselves. They are the caregivers, changemakers, student leaders, and community builders. Too often, natural helpers arrive feeling burned out, anxious, overwhelmed and physically exhausted. They look at their lives and realize they no longer recognize themselves. I believe people have an incredible capacity to heal, adapt, and grow. Therapy is a collaborative process where we slow down, make sense of what's been weighing on you, and reconnect with what matters most. You set the pace. My work is grounded in the belief that healing happens through connection - with ourselves, with other people, with animals, and with the natural world around us. This perspective is informed by One Health, which recognizes that human, animal, and environmental well-being are deeply interconnected. I offer therapy in-office, online, and through Nature-Informed Therapy and Walk-and-Talk sessions when clinically appropriate at various locations in the Delaware River Valley's Mercer-Bucks Region. Nature-informed therapy is always an invitation, never an expectation. For some people, movement and time in nature creates space to reflect, regulate, and reconnect. Others prefer the comfort of an office or telehealth. Together, we'll find the approach that feels right for you. As an NYU-trained Veterinary Social Worker, I also provide specialized support for veterinary students, compassion fatigue, animal companion loss and grief, Emotional Support Animal (ESA) evaluations and letters when clinically appropriate, and anyone whose relationship with an animal has profoundly shaped their life. These relationships deserve to be recognized and honored. Whether you're navigating burnout, anxiety, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, grief, identity questions, relationship challenges, or simply the feeling that you've lost yourself while caring for those around you, therapy offers a place to reconnect with yourself, your relationships, and the life you want to create. *I offer psychotherapy through both insurance-based and private-pay practice settings. Traditional office-based and telehealth services may be available through insurance. Specialized outdoor services, including Nature-Informed Therapy and Walk-and-Talk sessions, are offered through my private practice. Clients are encouraged to inquire about fees and verify any potential reimbursement with their insurance provider.* If you are enrolled in the Princeton University Student Health Plan (SHP), please use the following link to schedule your consultation. https://positivemindcounseling.clientsecure.me

Brenton Mitchell, LPC
Maybe you can't focus in class. Maybe you're more irritable than usual, sleeping badly, or pulling away from people. Maybe something ended, like a relationship, a sport, a friendship, or the person you were in high school, and nobody around you would call it a loss. College asks you to figure out who you are while performing at a high level, often far from the people who knew you best. When that gets heavy, it usually shows up as anxiety, low motivation, or anger before it looks like anything else. I'm a licensed professional counselor and a Penn State faculty member. I specialize in grief and in the losses people don't get permission to grieve: changes in identity, belonging, and the sense that you matter to the people and places around you. I work with students of any gender, and I have particular experience with men who were taught to handle things on their own. We'll start with what's actually happening for you now. Then we'll build practical skills and a clearer sense of where you're headed. My approach: I combine Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) with the basics that shape mental health: sleep, movement, and connection. I track progress with brief standardized check-ins, so you can see whether things are changing. I'm also certified in Nature Informed Therapy. Some sessions can happen outdoors as walk-and-talk sessions in the State College area. Many students find it easier to talk while walking side by side than while sitting across from someone in an office. Questions students often ask: Do you take insurance? I'm a private-pay, out-of-network provider. This means I do NOT accept insurance at this time. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, I can give you a superbill to submit for possible reimbursement. Paying directly also means no insurance claim is filed unless you choose to submit one. Reach out and we can talk through cost before you commit. My problem doesn't feel serious enough for therapy. You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis to start. Many students come in because something feels off and they want to address it before it affects their grades, relationships, or health. I've been to CAPS. How is this different? Off-campus counseling can continue beyond a set number of sessions or a single semester. It also allows for specialized work on grief, loss, and identity. What happens in the first session? We'll talk about what brought you in and what you want to be different. We'll also complete a few short questionnaires that give us a baseline. You'll leave with a sense of whether we're a good fit and what the next steps would be. Can we meet outside? Yes. Walk-and-talk sessions are available, depending on weather and your preference. Is this for emergencies? No. If you're in crisis, call or text 988, contact Penn State CAPS crisis services, or go to the nearest emergency room.
